RRR Consultancy Ltd is carrying out research to understand the impact of air pollution, fuel use, and energy options on boat dwellers across London. RRR says that “This study aims to gather insights into boaters’ awareness of air pollution and its health effects, access to energy sources, barriers to switching from solid fuels, and attitudes towards sustainability and the climate emergency. The findings will help inform local authorities, waterway organisations, and policymakers on how to improve support for boat dwellers”.
The research is being carried out for a partnership of London boroughs, the Port of London Authority and CRT. The aim of the work by RRR is to understand the challenges boaters face; to identify practical ways to support cleaner energy choices and to promote healthier living conditions on London’s waterways.
All London boat dwellers, including boaters without a home mooring and those with permanent moorings, are invited to participate by completing a brief online survey or taking part in face-to-face interviews at key mooring locations. Participation is confidential. Tell London boroughs, the Mayor and the navigation authorities exactly why our homes will become uninhabitable in winter if we can’t use our solid fuel stoves! Tell them that while we agree climate change and poor air quality are existential threats, there must be justice in the transition to clean energy, and that includes justice to those who have no viable alternatives to fossil fuels for heating and power.
