Environment Agency hikes boat registration more than double inflation – please give us feedback before 17th December

The Environment Agency (EA) is the second largest navigation authority in England and manages the River Thames above Teddington and the Anglian Waterways. The EA is increasing its boat registration fees by a massive 9% (more than 5% over inflation) in spite of very strong consultation feedback from boaters and other members of the public that this was way too much. A staggering 90% of consultation respondents were against the increase.

In a recent press release the EA said “Many customers did not support our proposal to increase charges by 9%. However, after careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to progress as outlined in the consultation.” The EA ignored the adverse feedback from the public: is this the EA or Rachael Reeves?

The fee hike was announced to the EA Advisory Group (N-WAG) and User Forum (N-WUF) on 27th November 2024 (the NBTA is represented on both of these groups).

There is a follow-up meeting on Tuesday 17th December 2024. The NBTA is asked to give feedback from its members. If you want to comment on this price hike please let secretariat@bargee-traveller.org.uk or 0118 321 4128 know in time for the meeting on Tuesday.

The Anglian Waterways include the River Ancholme, the Black Sluice Navigation, the River Great Ouse, the River Nene, the River Stour, the River Welland and the River Glen.
